Description

Defining an infinitely replicable look, feel, and design system for Apple Music’s search page.

Apple Music asked us to their search landing page to life, which serves as an exploratory jumping off point for users to discover music across moods and genres.

We needed a striking art direction that felt uniquely Apple while feeling familiar for users of other streaming services. The living nature of the platform also necessitated an evergreen, drop-dead simple replicability to keep up with continuously updating artists assets from differing sources with widely varying styles.

We started by aggregating and auditing playlist cover art from each genre which we referenced to establish a catalog of vibe-appropriate gradients. After experimenting with image treatment concepts, we devised a bulletproof set of rules and adjustments that dictate subject isolation, cropping, saturation, exposure, contrast, and curves, producing a mature, cohesive look no matter the asset.

The result was an infinitely reproducible system of tiles that ensures uniformity while colorfully communicating the sonic nuances of each genre and mood.
